Will Satathite, who was working Sunday at Rediske Air’s Nikiski office, confirmed to the Peninsula Clarion newspaper that the aircraft was flown by Nikiski pilot and company owner Willy Rediske.
A man who didn’t identify himself at the Rediske office declined comment later Sunday to the AP, saying the crash was under investigation.

Some were targeted because they were used by the military, but many of the attacks were motivated by the Taliban’s opposition to girls’ education and schooling that doesn’t follow their strict interpretation of Islam, the teachers and activists say.
Rasheed also justified recent attacks in Pakistan on health workers providing children with polio vaccinations, claiming the West is trying to sterilize Muslims. The Taliban have denied carrying out such attacks in the past.
The Taliban commander also criticized the U.N. honoring Malala as he said the world ignores civilians being killed in U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan’s northwest. The U.N. is currently conducting an investigation into allegations of civilian casualties from U.S. drone attacks.

Last week, in his testimony before the Senate Finance Committee, Attorney General Vincent Frazer cited the confiscation of the machines as an example of an alarming trend toward illegal gambling operations in the territory.

In mid-May, a bill proposing the legalization of more than 20,000 non-casino adult entertainment machines was introduced to the Puerto Rico Senate.
The bill has drawn opposition from legislators in the Puerto Rico House, who blame the spread of more than 45,000 such machines on the island for the closures of some casinos and the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue.
According to Biggs, such machines are allowed on St. Thomas and St. John, but not on St. Croix, where regulations are designed to protect the operation of the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort and Casino. Summer travelers should pack plenty of patience: More flights are running late this year than in 2012.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says that only 79.4 percent of domestic flights arrived on time in May, down from 83.4 percent in the same month last year.
Hawaiian Airlines was most likely to arrive on-time, while American Eagle, the regional-flying affiliate of American Airlines, had the worst rate.
Five planes were stuck on airport tarmacs for more than three hours, which is longer than allowed by federal regulations. Cancelations ticked up slightly from a year ago.
In the last five years, mergers have reduced the number of U.S. airlines and flights, which should help the carriers stay on schedule. But flights are extremely full _ average occupancy on all the major U.S. airlines topped 85 percent in June _ which means it can take longer for passengers to get on and off the plane.
The May results were still better than April, when airlines blamed furloughs of federal air traffic controllers for causing nearly one in four flights to be late and nearly one in 50 to be canceled.
“On-time performance was still pretty solid at nearly 80 percent as airlines navigated (stormy) summer weather,” said Jean Medina, a spokeswoman for Airlines for America, a trade group of the largest U.S. carriers. “It’s also important to note that customer satisfaction, as ranked by lower complaint rate, is improving.”
Look at Twitter and you’ll see that many travelers gripe about airlines, but few of them bother to file a formal complaint with the Transportation Department. In May, there were 561 complaints against U.S. carriers, or one for every 100,000 people who got on a plane. That was down by about one-third from the rate in May 2012.
Consumers were most likely to complain about United Airlines or American Airlines and least likely to kvetch about Alaska or Southwest.
Hawaiian, which benefits from favorable flying weather, held its usual spot at the top of the on-time rankings, with 92.4 percent of its flights arriving within 14 minutes of schedule _ that’s the government’s definition of on-time. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines were next.
At the other extreme, just 69.9 percent of American Eagle flights were on-time. ExpressJet and Mesa, which both operate regional flights for bigger airlines, and Frontier Airlines all scored below 75 percent.
Among the five largest U.S. airlines, Delta had the best on-time record, followed by US Airways, United, Southwest and American.

In another crash Saturday, two men had to swim to shore after their plane went down in the waters off Kodiak Island. The small plane crashed after its engine sputtered out, and the men swam about 50 yards, the Kodiak Daily Mirror reported.
The Soldotna crash also came a day after two teenagers were killed when an Asiana flight crashed at San Francisco’s airport.
The municipal airport is located about a mile from Soldotna’s commercial business area and is adjacent to the Kenai River, according to the city’s website.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A prominent Pakistani Taliban commander has written a letter to a teenage girl shot in the head by the group, expressing regrets that he didn’t warn her before the assassination attempt that propelled her activism to the international stage.
The letter from Adnan Rasheed, however, didn’t apologize for the October attack that left Malala Yousafzai gravely wounded. Rasheed, who has close relations with Taliban leaders, only said that he found the shooting “shocking” and wished it hadn’t happened.
Rasheed said he would leave it up to God to decide whether the outspoken activist for girls’ education should have been targeted.
“You have said in your speech yesterday that pen is mightier than sword,” Rasheed wrote in reference to Malala’s speech Friday at the United Nations, “so they attacked you for your sword not for your books or school.”
Rasheed said the letter received by The Associated Press late Tuesday night expressed his own opinion, not that of the militant group. The AP spoke to another Taliban commander Wednesday who confirmed the letter, written in English, was authentic.
Malala was 15 years old when she and two of her friends were attacked on their way home from school in Pakistan’s northwest Swat Valley. The Pakistani army launched a large offensive against the Taliban in Swat in the spring of 2009 and drove out many of the militants, but they have continued periodic attacks.
Rasheed said the Taliban only blow up schools that Pakistani soldiers use as hideouts. Teachers and activists say this is only partly true. Some were targeted because they were used by the military, but many of the attacks were motivated by the Taliban’s opposition to girls’ education and schooling that doesn’t follow their strict interpretation of Islam, the teachers and activists say.
Rasheed also justified recent attacks in Pakistan on health workers providing children with polio vaccinations, claiming the West is trying to sterilize Muslims. The Taliban have denied carrying out such attacks in the past.
The Taliban commander also criticized the U.N. honoring Malala as he said the world ignores civilians being killed in U.S. drone attacks in Pakistan’s northwest. The U.N. is currently conducting an investigation into allegations of civilian casualties from U.S. drone attacks.

ST. THOMAS 颅- The Licensing and Consumer Affairs Department has confiscated 10 illegal gaming machines from bars in Frederiksted, a move that underscores the need for greater enforcement as illicit gambling is on the rise, according to the V.I. Justice Department.
DLCA Commissioner Wayne Biggs Jr. said Wednesday that no money was confiscated along with the machines and that they were turned over to the V.I. Casino Control Commission for further investigation.
Bar owners were not penalized for having the machines in their establishments, but the issue of illegal machines is something that the Casino Commission and the Attorney General’s Office have taken up recently.
Last week, in his testimony before the Senate Finance Committee, Attorney General Vincent Frazer cited the confiscation of the machines as an example of an alarming trend toward illegal gambling operations in the territory.
Of particular concern are sports betting parlors, poker games and foreign lotteries cropping up on St. Thomas, Frazer said.
The Gaming Enforcement Division of the Justice Department suffers from short-staffing, and vacant positions are not considered critical, which would make them exempt from the hiring freeze imposed in 2011, according to Frazer.
This will make it difficult to handle an increase in case volume associated with the illegal activities or the added enforcement required should another casino open in the territory, Frazer told the Senate committee.

The machines come from Puerto Rico, Biggs said.
In Puerto Rico, the use of such machines has so threatened the casino industry that it has sparked a debate about the economic impact of the unregulated gambling. Authorities in Puerto Rico have confiscated about 11,000 such machines in the past two months, Biggs said.
In mid-May, a bill proposing the legalization of more than 20,000 non-casino adult entertainment machines was introduced to the Puerto Rico Senate.
The bill has drawn opposition from legislators in the Puerto Rico House, who blame the spread of more than 45,000 such machines on the island for the closures of some casinos and the loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue.
According to Biggs, such machines are allowed on St. Thomas and St. John, but not on St. Croix, where regulations are designed to protect the operation of the Divi Carina Bay Beach Resort and Casino. However, even had the machines been found on St. Thomas, they were improperly licensed and could have been subject to confiscation on those grounds, he said.

Summer travelers should pack plenty of patience: More flights are running late this year than in 2012.
The U.S. Department of Transportation says that only 79.4 percent of domestic flights arrived on time in May, down from 83.4 percent in the same month last year.
Hawaiian Airlines was most likely to arrive on-time, while American Eagle, the regional-flying affiliate of American Airlines, had the worst rate.
Five planes were stuck on airport tarmacs for more than three hours, which is longer than allowed by federal regulations. Cancelations ticked up slightly from a year ago.
In the last five years, mergers have reduced the number of U.S. airlines and flights, which should help the carriers stay on schedule. But flights are extremely full _ average occupancy on all the major U.S. airlines topped 85 percent in June _ which means it can take longer for passengers to get on and off the plane.
The May results were still better than April, when airlines blamed furloughs of federal air traffic controllers for causing nearly one in four flights to be late and nearly one in 50 to be canceled.
“On-time performance was still pretty solid at nearly 80 percent as airlines navigated (stormy) summer weather,” said Jean Medina, a spokeswoman for Airlines for America, a trade group of the largest U.S. carriers. “It’s also important to note that customer satisfaction, as ranked by lower complaint rate, is improving.”
Look at Twitter and you’ll see that many travelers gripe about airlines, but few of them bother to file a formal complaint with the Transportation Department. In May, there were 561 complaints against U.S. carriers, or one for every 100,000 people who got on a plane. That was down by about one-third from the rate in May 2012.
Consumers were most likely to complain about United Airlines or American Airlines and least likely to kvetch about Alaska or Southwest.
Hawaiian, which benefits from favorable flying weather, held its usual spot at the top of the on-time rankings, with 92.4 percent of its flights arriving within 14 minutes of schedule _ that’s the government’s definition of on-time. Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines were next.
At the other extreme, just 69.9 percent of American Eagle flights were on-time. ExpressJet and Mesa, which both operate regional flights for bigger airlines, and Frontier Airlines all scored below 75 percent.
Among the five largest U.S. airlines, Delta had the best on-time record, followed by US Airways, United, Southwest and American.

Scott could overcome this problem by appointing a new commissioner who will be free of the baggage others have brought to the job, who focuses on substance over style, and who stays out of the limelight except to celebrate the achievement of educators and school children.
